The minimum roof strength for light vehicles with vehicle empty weight less than 6000 is determined by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 216 “Roof Crush Resistance." Prior to September 1, 2012, FMVSS 216 required a static test of a front corner of the roof. The standard required that the roof resistance at 5 inches of deflection exceed 1.5 times the vehicle weight. Analysis of accident data by IIHS and others found that vehicles designed to the minimum FMVSS 216 requirements sustained severe roof damage in rollovers. In 2009, IIHS initiated a consumer information test that required the roof to support 4 times the vehicle weight to obtain the best rating. During this same period, ASRI received funding that could be used to examine roof deformations in dynamic rollover tests so that dynamic testing could be compared with static testing. The most repeatable dynamic test device available was the Jordan Rollover System (JRS). A series of vehicle tests using the JRS was conducted and the results made available to NHTSA and IIHS.
